I've been running this photoblog of over 10 weeks, I've been running my other one for just two weeks and it has more hits than this one :( So as no-one is really interested in pictures of Lincoln, I'll only post in this blog when I feel like it, if hits go up I'll have a re-think, until then, only occasional posts as I feel like it.

Nomatter what I've tried, you can almost never find it on Google either, the problem is "Lincoln", the a very popular American car, they all come above this site for starters :( I've put more into promotion of this site then I have the other one too.

Roman Lower West Gate Ruins At City Hall

If you visit the City Hall you find the ruins of the Roman City Wall and the 4th Century gate. The City Hall is built over some of the ruins.

The Stonebow

The Stonebow on Lincoln High Street, it used to be one of the city gates, but Lincoln is so much bigger now of course. In the passageway through the Stonebow is a shop each side, a sweet shop and a jewellers. Both sides are shown.

Sea Cadets Training Ship Wrangler

The Sea Cadets Training Ship Wrangler, it of course isn't a ship, its a building, but that's how the Navy works! This is a photoset covering all the building you can see from the Waterside, the second and third pictures being the view through the bars of the gates, the sixth is the view after you have walked past it and hang over the railings lol. Saint Benedicts Centre

St Benedicts Centre in St Benedicts Square is an old church, used as a Mothers Union cafe etc. The full set of photographs travels around the whole building, picture 3 shows the edge of the war memorial on the High Street, which St Benedicts is behind. Picture 1 was taken from the window of the British Home Stores cafe, it shows the church grounds which are now a nice park. Photographs taken on a sunny 6th March 2006.

Cornhill Exchange

Cornhill Exchange, once home of the Cornhill Vaults, the best pub in Lincoln, now gone forever :( There was also an arcade of small shops and a large toyshop, all have become part of Waterstones, with Abbey at the other end. Photographs taken 2nd March 2006.

Tritton Road Demolition / Building Site

As one building comes down, a new one replaces it. This building has been demolished as much as they need to, what you see is where they will begin rebuilding, so perhaps building industrial and commercial buildings from girders then bricks isn't such a bad idea! I cannot remember what the building was and don't yet know what it will become. This photoseries is in order, so following it is a walk around the building. A builder I spoke to told me to return in three weeks to see a difference, so I will :) Photographs taken on a very gloomy 27th February 2006.

High Street Level Crossing

The level crossing on Lincoln High Street, I remember reading that it is closed for 20 minutes each hour and its on a main road! I've taken pictures looking up and down the track, plus with the crossing closed (not a long wait for that to happen lol). Photographs taken on a cloudy 28th February 2006.

Saint Mary-Le-Wigford Parish Church Water Conduit

This is interesting, it looks like a tomb, but its not! Its in the grounds of Saint Mary-le-Wigford Parish Church in Lincoln town centre (between the railway station and level crossing). The photographs show the front, one side and back (the other side couldn't be photographed clearly because of a wall!). The back appears to have a small wooden door, which stops me thinking it is a tomb. It was built by the inhabitants of the South ward of Lincoln in 1540, it is believed to have been built with fragments of The Whitefriars, which originally stood on the site of St. Marks Railway station.

Wigford Way Canal Bridge

This is the Wigford Way bridge over the canal, on the path between "The Glory Hole" and the Waterside, along with the "Where Are You Going" and "Where Have You Been" signs. Lincoln Council are proud of them, others say it ruins the look of the area. The bright red building is "Marks & Spencers". The third picture shows the graffiti under the bridge, why is Lincoln suffering from a graffiti outbreak? If money was spent on removing graffiti and stopping more instead of signs like these, it would probably be a better idea for everyone. Photographs taken on a bright 28th February 2006.

Foss Wharf / Ropewalk Graffiti Bridge

Foss Wharf graffiti Bridge, the place is a Bl**dy eyesore, I agree graffiti can be an artform, but I also agree it can be vandalism and this is without doubt vandalism! The bridge runs over the canal and carries the Ropewalk. Photographs taken on a cloudy 27th February 2006.

After a few days off posting, the weather has slightly improved so I'm back! But its going to snow this week, I hope to utilise the situation and take some nice photographs. :)

Development Next To Witch & Wardrobe Pub

The building next to The Witch & Wardrobe Pub (Currently closed down) is being re-developed, I'm unsure as to what is was prior to the scaffolding. The black and white timbered building on the right is the Green Dragon Pub. Pictures taken on a cloudy 17th February 2006.

Today its raining, a lot! I'm due to take more photographs but weather has stopped me, so I may have a short break from posting. Roll on summer!

Barge Bar & Restaurant On The Brayford Waterfront

The Barge Bar & Restaurant on the Brayford Waterfront is a barge, converted to be a restaurant, they specialize in fish based meals, they don't appear to have a website etc.

Saint Martins Cemetery, Beaumont Fee

Saint Martins cemetery has been used for burials for 800 years, some of the cemetery now lies beneath the Beaumont Fee road, the railings, like all railings around churchyards where removed during WWII. It is now a park, most gravestones have been turned into paving slabs, I have photographed the few surviving standing ones. The first six pictures are walking around the edge of the cemetery, picture seven shows the paths and seats inside the cemetery and the last four are the surviving standing tombstones.

Doddington Church Near Lincoln

Doddington Church, a few miles out of Lincoln. The scaffolding is because the roof is being re-leaded. As you can see it is a very photogenic building, I will have to return when the scaffolding is down and there is more sunshine! This Anglican Parish Church is dedicated to Saint Peter, it was first built in stone in 1771. Pictures taken 18th February 2006, the sun was breaking through the clouds and flowers are starting to appear from bulbs. It looks like winter is beginning to end!

Friends Meeting House Religious Society Of Friends (Quakers)

This is the old Friends Meeting House, built in 1920, now called "The Religious Society Of Friends" (the Church of the Quakers) its on the corner of Park Street and Beaumont Fee. Next to it is Saint Martins Cemetery Park which I will cover shortly. Photographs taken on a cloudy 17th Feb 2006.

Enigma Zone On Free School Lane

On Free School Lane is the closed down Enigma Zone (it was a Laser Tag game), its been closed for years, maybe a decade. The building really reminds me of the old style Post Office, the kind that had a telephone exchange upstairs. Im surprised its never been redeveloped as a Witherspoons style pub, but maybe its too big! Next door is a white building that looks very old, its now the Nomad Trust. Unfortunately I cant find anything about the history of either building. Photographs taken 13th February 2006.

Lincoln Drill Hall

This is Lincoln Drill Hall, Lincolns only real venue. I've been there a few times, I've seen The Damned and Stiff Little Fingers there (good gigs BTW). It is pretty small (for a venue) inside, we need a bigger and better venue in Lincoln! The front (the "castle" side) I remember being a sort of Museum in the 1970s, I recall seeing a lot of stuffed animals there as a child, see the History site link below for more info. If you study the first picture you can see the roof behind and that is over picture two and three. Photographs taken 9th February 2006.

Graveyard / Park On Saltergate

This is a small park on Saltergate, it used to be a graveyard, have a look at the paving stones etc and you will see they are gravestones. The stonework is turning very green from algae growing on it. People often sit here and eat their lunch in the Summer. Picture 1 & 2 shows Bank Street 3-5 moves onto Saltergate, picture 6 Is onto Free School Lane and picture 7 is into the center of the park. Picture 2 shows the back of the Waterside too! Angels Statue Over The Canal

For Valentines day, here's something I DON'T love - modern art in a historical city. This was Lincoln's misguided Millennium project, one day someone will write a book about all the poor, foolish and downright stupid ideas people put into action in the name of the Millennium, they'll start with the Dome and end with this! It would probably be OK in a modern town like Milton Keynes (sorry Milton Keynes), but in historical Lincoln - I don't think so! You can also see the Waterside shopping centre in the background, which is a modern building, but made to look like it belongs! (designers of the Debenhams store please take note how to do it!). Where Are All The Local Photographer Blogs / Sites?

Today I decided to add links to other local photographer blogs, who do like I do, just photograph their chosen town. But I've hit a bit of a dead-end, apart from the Newcastle site that is already linked in the sidebar (which inspired me to do this blog!) I can't find any, there are loads that may also include the occasional picture of their hometown, but none that are exclusively their chosen town. So are you are running one? Of so please email me and ill happily link you, or if you need a subject for a photo-blog, here it is! I do have to admit with Lincoln, I've an easy job, so much to photograph, so much constantly changing, so photogenic, but as I've found, the more I look into things, the more there is!

Here are three pictures I've taken of other towns to inspire you, or maybe make you say that you can do better :)

Bridlington promenade in stormy weather, summer 2005, we didn't get any real rain that day, but it was very dramatic, there is a kinda rainbow in the sky in the middle of the picture. This picture is as it came out, not photoshopped.

Skegness Stadium, dusk 2004, the stock-car racing was great. I didn't expect to get much of a result with a digital camera at that time of day, but the floodlights where enough. Again not photoshopped.

Skegness, Fantasy Island, 1998 or 1999 (I think), they where in the middle of building the giant roller-coaster, as you can see not all the rails are assembled yet. I bet no-one has a set of pictures of all this under construction and I never thought to take lots of pictures at the time. Something that is probably lost forever.

Derelict Petrol Station On Broadgate & ORourkes

Probably one of the most foolishly placed petrol stations in Lincoln was "Save" on Broadgate, terrible for access, terrible placement for getting customers and terrible when you wished to leave. Perhaps that is why it closed down? It has now been purchased for development. Next door was ORourkes pub, now also derelict, probably purchased with it. The first two pictures are the Save Petrol Station from above (taken from the top of the multi-storey car park), the last 3 are of ORourkes. Photographs taken on sunny 9th Feb 2006.

Wesleyan School Building & Old Cemetery

On the corner of Croft Street and Rosemery Lane (off Monks Road) is this lovely little old cemetery, the first two pictures show the location, the next few are all the tombs, I didn't bother with the gravestones, they where so worn you couldn't read them. The last two pictures are directly oppersite the cemetery (on Rosemary Line), the old Wesleyan School building, its now owned by Pygott & Chrone I think! Photographs taken 9th Feb 2006.

And today brought something that was missing from my photographs for a month, SUNSHINE - doesn't Lincoln look a better place with Sunshine? I have taken some photographs on Broadgate too, more tomorrow!

Empty Shops, Sites & An Eyesore

First up is Singletons estate agents, they have moved premesis so its an empty shop atm. Probably not for long though. This is near the Stonebow, i think the street name is "Saltergate".

This is next to the burned-out restaurant on the Waterside, its not used and fenced off, will it be built on in the future? Its not exactly a site of natural beauty is it?

Littlewoods on the High street has closed down, no news who is taking it over atm, more news as it happens.

A fountain on the Waterfront, it always sprays passers-by with water if its windy and IMHO doesnt meet the look of Lincoln, hopefully it will be removed one day, no doubt itll take years though.

The first update is the old Waterfront library building, the builders fencing has finally been removed, it looks much better already. There is no "for sale" type sign though, so I assume its already been acquired. The first picture shows the turntable room, the turntable has been covered up with plywood though, the second is where the Waterside meets Lucy Tower Street and the third shows the inside of the turntable room.

Tourist Information Signs On The Waterfront

Three tourist information signs on the waterfront, I have left the compression ratio alone so you can read all the information on the first two Click on them for a larger version, then you need to save the image to your hard drive and zoom in. The detail on the blue sign needs to be too high, but you can read the larger print.

I have taken a lot of update pictures, I hope to have time to post them tomorrow.

Job Center On The High Street

The Job Center on the High Street is now closed to the public, I'm told that Job Center staff still work there though. So are the "attractive" boarded up windows here to stay? Or will the be replaced with something more pleasing to the eye? Or perhaps it will have a new use or even new owners in the future? Pictures taken 30th Jan 2006.

Claytons Carpets On Triton Road / Dixon Street Being Extended

Claytons Carpet Superstore on the corner of Triton Road and Dixon Street is being extended, it also appears its having some work done to the front of the building. This photoset covers all round the building, the last photograph leads back to the first. Photographs taken 2nd Feb 2006. Again, another dull day!

Cornhill Market Redevelopment Or Repair

The Cornhill Covered Market is having some work done to it, I'm unsure if its becoming shops (as first rumored in the press), or just repairs etc. All the stalls claim they are not closing, so I assume they are coming back to their old pitches after the work is done. War Memorial At Newark Road/Maple Street

Most people have seen the war memorial in the town centre, but not so many are aware of this one. Directions are simple, drive down Newark road as far as The Gatehouse pub, then immediately turn left onto Maple street and park. This pictures show all 4 sides and the poppies left there too! If you want to read the inscriptions on the memorial click on the thumbnails and the large versions of the pictures will load, resolution is good enough! I took the photographs on the morning of 2nd February 2006, it really was a grey morning and also 0.5 degrees, and didn't warm up all day!

The Old Library On The Waterfront

About a year ago this was one of Lincolns Public library's. Its a strange shaped building, that built in the late 1950s as a car showroom, the round part of the building being the main show-area complete with turntable! I believe its a listed building because of the interesting shaped roof (see picture 2)! It has now been redeveloped into 2 bar/restaurants "Tootsies" and "Nandos" and a currently fenced off empty building. The last photograph shows a hole made in the top floor, probably to be a railed area for a club or perhaps a glass dancefloor? Because of the interesting shape of that section, I'm sure it will make a dance area. Lets see! Photographs taken the morning of 31 Jan 2006.

Burned Out Restaurant On The Waterfront

This is the last building an the Waterfront, this restaurant caught fire and was burned out many years ago, I've tried to find out exactly how long, but friends are unsure, we all agree its a long time though. All entrances have now been bricked up. The first three pictures are from the front, the rest are of the back of the building. The one with the blue skip is looking down an alleyway that has a wire mesh fence to stop access. This is the only building on the waterfront that hasn't been developed, although I understand it has been purchased to convert into (or demolish and build new) luxury flats. Developing this eyesore will certainly finish the Waterfront off. Photographs taken morning of 30th January 2006.

This certainly doesnt show the attractive side of Lincoln, but this is part of the idea of this Blog, to show the changing face of Lincoln, before and after. Places like this are few and far between! If anyone knows of any more buildings like this, please let me know, they need covering before they are redeveloped!

I took a load of photos this morning, around the town center, I need to sort them etc, they will be online this week. Even looking at the town-centre, Lincoln is changing so much!

Lincs FM Log Cabin Christmas 2005

This was the ticket booth (referred to as the Log Cabin) for the Lincs FM (Our local radio station) ice rink in the city square (outside Wilko's), the pictures where taken December 2005 (the cabin was there for about 6 weeks). These pictures where taken because we where thinking of building a shed using this design and I wanted pictures of the joints etc, that is why the pictures are not framed as well as you might expect. The pictures are still of interest though.

A friend looked at this site then pointed out to me that everyone photographs the Cathedral and Castle, but so many streets and buildings are forgotten about. Lets hope this site begins to rectify this. After all you must have looked at pictures of your hometown from when you was a child and noted how shops have changed etc.

Carholme Road Demolition Site

Demolition site on Carholme Road, early spring 2003. This site now has a new block of student flats on it, they were completed and lived in by September 2003 (we'll photograph it this week if we can and post a picture), prior to demolition this was an old house, sadly we weren't aware it was due for demolition or we'd have "before and after" pics!
